New iPhone 5 rumor LTE and smaller dock connector

With the third-generation iPad launch now a week old -- unless youre in todays second wave of launch countries, that is -- the rumor mill has turned its attention back to the iPhone. 

The latest comes from iMore, which today posts some chewy, though anonymously-sourced hardware details about Apples next smartphone. Those include a move to a 4G LTE radio like the one the third-generationiPad ships with, a display thats "similar if not same sized" to Apples long-time 3.5-inch spec, and the move to a smaller dock port for charging and data transfers. 

The blog, which correctly targeted the announcement date of Apples third-generation iPad unveiling, as well as the tablets inclusion of 4G LTE networking, added that the new phone would follow in the iPhone 4S footsteps and launch in the fall. 

Besides 4G LTE, which was rumored ahead of the iPhone 4S, this is the latest such mention of Apple working on a miniaturized dock connector to help make extra room in its portable devices. A report from Japanese Apple-centric blog Macotakara in October claimed as much, with iMore adding to those claims last month, saying the smaller ports were headed to the iPhone and iPad so that Apple could make more room in those devices for other components.

Wikipad Emerges With 249 7 Inch Android Slate

Wikipad is back, this time with a 7-inch Android gamer-focused tablet that we’ll see later this spring.

We’ve heard this before, of course. The Los Angeles hardware startup rolled into CES in 2012 with a 10-inch tablet that featured a glasses-free 3-D display and removable console-style game controller case. And then … nothing. Wikipad never shipped anything, and skipped CES entirely this year. But Wikipad says it’s for real this time.

Although the eponymous 7-inch tablet is smaller that what we were promised, Wikipad says the slate will pack the punch its 10-inch prototype aimed for. The move to a smaller size will allow the company to give its first device a more consumer-friendly price of $249. Shrinking the Wikipad is probably a good idea for the startup. Until last year, small tablets stunk. That changed with the release of Google’s Nexus 7, the Kindle Fire HD, Apple’s iPad Mini and tablets from Barnes & Noble, Samsung and others that mixed affordable price with powerful specs. But while small slates have caught on, the market for larger tablets is still largely defined by Apple’s iPad and little else.

The new, smaller Wikipad retains the detachable gaming controls and mighty Nvidia Tegra 3 processor seen in its larger prototype predecessor. When the Wikipad does arrive, it will run on Google’s Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system. Inside, the tablet will make use of 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. The device’s 7-inch IPS display will be HD, with a 1280×800 resolution. On paper, the Wikipad looks capable, but questions remain as to whether or not Wikipad — a company that’s pretty much unknown to consumers — can match Google and Amazon in delivering blockbuster sales for its small tablet. Various sources claim the iPhone 5 will feature a larger, 4-inch screen. Digitimes quotes the source as saying that Apple is expanding the screen size "to support the tablet PC market as the vendor only has a 9.7-inch iPad in the market."

On 23 May 2011, we reported on rumours that the iPhone 5 could feature a curved glass screen. These rumours also came from Digitimes, which said that Apple has purchased between 200 and 300 special glass cutting machines because theyre too costly for the manufacturers to invest in.

In March 2012, new reports suggested that the new iPhone 5 would come sporting a larger 4.6-inch retina display, while April rumours even suggested the next iPhone will use new touch technology and will be encased in something called "liquidmetal."

Apple is making a smartwatch Is it the next iPod nano

Hold onto your timepieces folks: Apple is working on a smart watch that runs on iOS, just like the iPhone and iPad. Is it the next generation iPod nano?

Both the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal are reporting that Apple is “experimenting” with a smart watch based on iOS and a curved glass screen. The Times also says that it’ll be controlled with Siri, Apple’s clever voice assistant that responds to natural language commands.

For now, it appears Apple is only testing this idea in its labs, with no concrete plan to bring it to market. But it wouldn’t be the biggest surprise if it did: smart watches are finally coming of age. The recently released Pebble watch for iPhone and Android raised more than $10 million (£6.3,) on Kickstarter, while Apple itself has encouraged iPod nano users to use the square touchscreen model as a watch by releasing different clock faces for it.

It’s no secret that iPod sales are falling too, so could Apple’s masterplan be to turn the next iPod nano into a smartwatch? An iPod that connected to your iPhone to display notifications and even run apps could easily become an essential accessory, and send those sales soaring right up again.

Hands on with HiSenses first quad core Android phone the U958

Chinese manufacturer HiSense has taken over Microsofts old booth at CES, and its mainly showing off its latest and greatest televisions. But the company has a dirty little secret that not too many gadget fans know: it sells phones and tablets as well. While these devices may not be on the bleeding edge, HiSenses new Android smartphone, the U958, actually sports a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Play processor (the MSM8225Q, to be precise). Aside from the inclusion of Android 4.1, the rest of the spec sheet doesnt impress: a 4.5-inch FWVGA (854×480) display, 5MP rear camera, 512MB RAM, 4GB internal storage, microSD, 1,700mAh battery, dual-SIM support and a thickness of 9.5mm.

Its pretty clear that the phone is geared primarily toward emerging markets; the specs and overall design seem to indicate that the companys trying to keep costs down to a minimum.
